The aim of this exercise is for you to see and understand the main
differences between bitmap and vector graphics. You heard about the
differences in the lesson and can see an example here:
You will examine the differences by drawing the same picture, first using
bitmap graphics (e.g. in Paint) and then using vector graphics (with the Word or LibreOffice drawing
Using Microsoft Paint (in the Accessories section of your Start menu):
Reproduce the picture of the boat shown on the right - don't worry if it doesn't look exactly the same or the colours aren't right.
Copy and paste the boat twice, so that you end up with 3 boats.
Resize two of the boats so that they are all different
sizes, and arrange them in size order so that they fit across the
Change the direction of the middle
boat by flipping it horizontally (you need to select the middle boat first, and then use the Image menu).
Your row of boats should look a bit like this:
Before you close Paint, open the file drawing_boats.doc and answer the following questions:
Try to make the rear sail (the one under the blue flag) larger in proportion to the boat. What happens if you try? What difficulties did you have?
Save the file from Paint. What is the size of the file? You can find the size of the file by clicking the right-mouse button on the file and selecting Properties.
Remember where you saved the file as you will need to submit it with your task.
Using the Drawing tools in Word or LibreOffice, repeat the steps in Task 1 to create a similar picture of three boats in a row. If you can't see the Drawing toolbar in LibreOffice, select it from the Toolbars section on the View menu before you start. The drawing tools are on the Insert tab in Word.
Do NOT copy the picture from Paint into Word when
attempting this task - you must draw the boats from scratch using the drawing tools. If
you copy and paste, you will be using bitmap graphics, not vector
Save the file in Word or LibreOffice format and check the size before answering the remaining questions in the same drawing_boats.doc file that you were using for Task 1:
How large is the Word/LibreOffice file that contains the picture of the three boats?
When drawing the two boats, which of the two programs (Paint and Word/LibreOffice) did you prefer, and why?
Try resizing one of the sails again - this time in Word/LibreOffice. Can you do it now? How easy was it to do this using the Drawing tools?
Explain how the two programs (Paint and Word/LibreOffice) differ - talk about things such as the way pictures are stored and can be edited.
